Upward and Outward

I'm looking for an answer in the travels through my mind.
Smoke and pills and all the rest have long been left behind.

I've seen my mind but it was too far out for me to handle.
My life, it flickers dimly now, so like a dying candle.

I'm sticking at my body now and my whole life is dim.
O, won't you people please stop saying "Give your life to Him".
And the white gull spirals upward,
   Ever upward, never ending.
And the white lamb frolics outward,
   Ever outward, never ending.

I'm standing on the banks of a river deep and long.
My sights are on a white gull that for many days has flown.

It's trying hard to tell me something, but I don't know why.
My heart is reaching out to it, but all it does is cry.

Now death at last is coming and I'm not ready to die.
Oh won't somebody do something, don't just stand there and sigh.
And the white gull spirals upward,
   Ever upward, never ending.
And the white lamb frolics outward,
   Ever outward, never ending.

The tearing, straining, rending at my body and my mind...
I know that now at last reality is left behind.

And see before me dimly now the shadow of my past.
Oh, my God, how long can all this torture really last?

You know there is a limit to just how much man can take.
Please people, won't you leave a guy alone, for pity's sake?
And the white gull spirals upward,
   Ever upward, never ending.
And the white lamb frolics outward,
   Ever outward, never ending.

I feel a steady pulling now, and know that I am free.
My body drops behind me and that's all that they can see.

I know that I can make it now, my soul is on the spree.
Oh, my God, I see the white gull coming after me.

He calls, "My son come with me now, there's much for you to see.
Let me show you mankind's life; the truth will set you free."
And the white gull spirals upward,
   Ever upward, never ending.
And the white lamb frolics outward,
   Ever outward, never ending.
